The Hillsdale women's basketball team brought their overall record back to .500 last weekend and are now 9-5 in the GLIAC - one game behind South Division leader Findlay University. Just last week the Chargers had lost three straight games, but they responded by going 3-0 in their next three.

Head coach Claudette Charney said they are back within striking distance as the conference play winds down over the next few weeks.

"We are in good position right now, you just have to keep winning, and anything can happen," she said. "We're still going after a divisional championship."

Thursday night against Saginaw Valley State University, sophomore Chelsea Harrison continued her hot streak from deep, as she made five three-pointers and led the team with 21 points and four steals. The Chargers came through with 17 total steals, and their defense resulted in 29 total turnovers by Saginaw. Seniors Janay Miller and Brooke Knight combined for 29 points, nine rebounds, and 11 assists to propel Hillsdale to a 75-57 victory.

Lake Superior State University came into Jesse Phillips Arena Saturday ready for a fight. The last two contests between these teams have been decided by a total of three points. The Chargers won their home match-up last year, 62-60, and won by one point on the road earlier this season, 75-74.

Hillsdale went in to the half with a nine-point lead, but that lead was negated two minutes into the second half as the Lakers went on an 8-0 run. Neither team could pull away from there.

"We changed our defense coming out of the half, and on the first pass they hit a three," said Charney of the run. "We're going to have to weather storms like that."

Knight was on the bench in foul trouble for a majority of the second half, and freshman guard Lea Jones was impressive in relief.

Harrison said that Jones was the spark the team needed in second half, as the freshman came through with 11 points, including a lay-up with under a minute left that gave the Chargers the lead for good.

"Lea came in and knew what she was doing; she was the leader out there," Harrison said.

Another key contributor was junior Amanda Geelhoed, who was a perfect 7-for-7 from the field.

Ultimately, Charney said Hillsdale got the win by out-hustling the Lakers in crunch time.

Now the Chargers get to go on the road riding a little momentum.

Like the previous weekend, Hillsdale has already beaten both of their upcoming opponents once. Tiffin University comes in at 3-11 in the GLIAC, but Saturday's match-up pits Hillsdale against the second place team in the North Division - Grand Valley Sate University (11-3). Jones said the Chargers would love to win both games and come back confident for their toughest home games.

"We need a couple more wins under our belt so we can come back strong at home [next weekend], because those are big games," she said.
