Recently, the administration released next year's school calendar. Everyone remembers this time last year, when we found out we would have classes on Labor Day and finals on a Saturday. Next year, both of those things still apply, with a few changes. Additionally, Homecoming Weekend was moved to early November - far too late, in our opinion. We doubt many alumni will travel to Michigan in November to watch an outdoor football game.

Next year, finals will start on a Saturday and students will have two reading days. We think it makes much more sense to have one reading day and no finals on the weekend. Also, it seems doubtful that many students will actually use Friday as a reading day after just having finished classes.

The administration did make one positive change in the schedule: we will return to a four-week Christmas break. It also decided to keep fall break - giving students and professors a much needed break in the middle of the semester.

Still, attending classes on Labor Day and taking exams on a Saturday takes things too far. We appreciate getting more time to ring in Christmas cheer with our families, but we would also like to eat hot dogs with them on Labor Day.

Finally, many students disliked last semester's final schedule and many have opinions on whether or not to have fall break. The administration should instate a school-wide poll to guage student and faculty opinion on such matters. We understand certain things like an annual speedway race and NCAA games must be worked around, but there is still some room for discussion.

This is a rather weak opinion piece. That seems to be a trend. I'm all for moderation, but sometimes you might want to pick something that you can have fun really shooting off an opinion on (no, not baseball). (Continued…)
