Going abroad this summer? You'll want to get your passport soon. It can take up to six weeks and $200 to obtain.
To get a passport, you will need proof of citizenship, a birth certificate or naturalization certificate, a proof of identification like a driver's license, two identical two-inch square photos taken within the last six months. These photos can be easily obtained either at the post office or the county clerk, or for a lower price, at most pharmacies.
You can download a passport application from travel.state.gov and fill it out online. After that, take all the identification documents, photos and the passport application to a post office, or to a county, city or town clerk.
You will have to pay both an application fee and an execution fee. Those can add up to $200.
It will take about six weeks to receive your passport. If you need your passport sooner, you can pay an extra fee for expedited service.
