Fraternity highlights film on human trafficking

Delta Tau Delta fraternity will host a showing of "Call and Response" at 8 p.m. on Nov. 21 in Phillips Auditorium.

The "rockumentary" highlights the modern-day fight against slavery and incorporates commentary and music from celebrities and contemporary artists.

For sophomore Drew French, Delta Tau Delta philanthropy chairman, this event represents the next step in igniting a campus-wide conversation to address the modern slave trade.

"This is a culmination - this is what this semester is anchored around," he said.
French said he envisions a day when the fight against slavery becomes a definite vision of Hillsdale College, transcending even his own fraternity.

"Slavery is an extremely undervalued issue and it is something Americans have turned a blind eye to for too long," he said. "Hillsdale being a place based on a history of such freedom fighters is something to take hold of and make ours as a cause."

Campus cat finds a permanent home

The affectionate gray cat known around campus as Carl, Jeremy, Oscar and probably a handful of other names, has found a permanent home.

He was recently adopted and lives on a farm in the Hillsdale area, Northside Veterinary Hospital Kennel Assistant Betsy Kerr said.
Kerr could not provide further details on the cat's current situation.

The cat had been hanging around Mary Randall Preschool, but after climbing through a window, jumping on the hood of a parent's car and using the sandbox for litter, Sonja Drews, head teacher at the preschool, took the cat to the veterinary, Drews said.

None of the parents wanted to adopt the cat, she said.

Sophomore Roni Roth, who has worked at the veterinary for three years, said veterinary workers neutered the cat, rid it of fleas and vaccinated it. They liked the cat and kept it in the kennel for longer than normal.

Finally, they placed it in a cage in the lobby and labeled it for adoption.

The cat was adopted shortly thereafter.

MSU?students plan to renovate downtown

Citizens of Hillsdale gathered Tuesday night at the Hillsdale County Library to meet for the second time with fourth-year Michigan State University landscape architecture students as part of the Small Town Design Initiative.

Attendees divided into small groups with at least one MSU student and went through sixty photos of art, architecture, and signage from other Michigan towns, recording the opinions of the Hillsdale residents.

The students spent the whole day exploring Hillsdale and will use their experience in addition to the feedback received to aid in designing improvements to the city.

The next meeting will be held Dec. 17 in Lansing.
