Assistant to the President Mike Harner said Hillsdale maintained a friendly, supportive tone with the NRA because the two organizations each defend the Constitution. The growth of the basic shotgun course, he said, shows how popular firearm rights are on campus.
"The shotgun course has been a marked success," Harner said. "Over three semesters 115 students have taken it and it is full for next semester. It provides a great introduction to trap shooting and a foundation which one can build upon should they be interested."
Raney said courses like basic shotgun help raise awareness of Second Amendment rights while providing a service for students interested in firearms.
"Our classes are an excellent way to promote gun sports and gun safety," he said. "It is a win-win situation."
Arnn said the college would continue setting up exhibitions at the NRA's annual convention in an effort to earn new Imprimis subscriptions. In the more distant future, he said, the school will finish ex-panding its shooting range.
"The shooting range is going to be a good thing," Arnn said. "I think it will be widely used."
