The Hillsdale College Art Department has rescheduled its annual senior art shows in light of this year's high volume of art majors. 15 students will now present their art galleries in five separate groups of three starting on Sunday, March 14 and running until Saturday, May 8.
"It is surprising and gratifying to have so many people majoring in art," said Sam Knecht, the chairman of Hillsdale's art department. "We had planned to have the last three weeks of spring semester devoted to senior art showings. We will now have two sets of seniors with exhibitions before spring break."
Knecht said each group will have one week for showcasing its art. He said the two groups showing before spring break will display their wares Sunday, March 14 through Friday, March 19 and Sunday, March 21 through Friday, March 26, respectively.
The other groups have galleries running after spring break. Knecht said the first runs Sunday, April 18 through Friday, April 23 and the second runs Sunday, April 25 through Friday, April 30. The last gallery, he said, runs Sunday, May 2 through Sunday, May 8 in correspondence with commencement.
Students are grouped in accordance with the distance from their hometown, he added, with the students farthest away showing closer to commencement for their families.
Knecht said student responses towards the decision were positive. Overall, he said, the students were optimistic about having a busier schedule in exchange for showing their pieces.
"This year's batch is a great bunch," he said. "Everyone is excited to keep their eyes on this opportunity."
Senior Carly Gosine said the earlier schedule may prove stressful for students. Despite this, she said she believes the change will best help the majority of 2010's art majors.
"The art department seems on top of things despite not having this many people before," she said. "The system is really fair and they're handling it very well."
Senior Tyler Sharette said he would have enjoyed displaying his work regardless of the schedule. He said he values the change to display their efforts before family and friends more than he does time constraints before graduation.
"It is nice seeing what emotions I can evoke out of other people," he said. "Everyone will get their time in a showcase and it will all be peachy-keen."
