Despite nominating ideas for this year's senior class gift and commencement speaker two months ago, the selection process is at a standstill.
Senior class officers have not yet met with the president's office to discuss the prospective com-mencement speaker for this year's graduating class, Abby Ashmore, senior class president, said Friday.
There has been no progress since the Sept. 3 senior meeting, in which the class of 2010 discussed the year's business and seniors nominated candidates.
"We're waiting to meet with the administration," Ashmore said. "We don't know if they have anyone in mind."
Ashmore said the senior class usually compiles a list of names, which officers then submit to the administration. Class officers also set up a meeting with President Larry Arnn and his office, where they discuss the prospective speakers. Ultimately, the list provided by the senior class is just a suggestion; the administration has the final say in who is invited to speak.
In response to a partial list of nominated speakers, Carmen Wyatt-Hayes, professor of Spanish, said she would like to hear a respectable speaker at graduation in May.
"I hope that our commencement speaker would be a strong conservative intellectual, with equal weight on 'conservative' and 'intellectual,'" she said, "because that's what we're about: we're a college."
Nominations were given for the prospective senior gift at the same meeting in September.
"We're in the same place with the senior gift ideas as we are with the nominations; we need to meet with the administration," Ashmore said. "We need to see what ideas are possible ideas and what we can actually pursue as a class gift."
Ashmore said the senior class council hopes to meet with the administration this month in order to discuss both the speaker and the gift.
Seniors are still encouraged to e-mail ideas for commencement speaker or the gift to Betsy Peters, class secretary.
