Art majors choose theses over senior shows

Writing the third art thesis in the art department for a field so far untouched, holds excitement for Andwood.

"It's definitely going through uncharted territory," she said. "It's exciting to do something people haven't done before."

Art theses entail a lot more work for Bushey, who participates significantly less in students' senior shows. With each thesis, Bushey said the process gets easier.

"I'm getting better at maintaining a calendar which I think is the critical factor."

She said the fact that students who write art theses analyze art in addition to books does hold an appeal.

"You're evaluating a different medium," Bushey said. "You get to look at pretty things. If you're reading there's a limit to the aesthetic quality," she said.

That's not to say art historians don't read books too.

"They trade off - they both offer information," she said.

Although she appreciates the ability of students to write theses, Bushey said the art thesis option does not represent a separate art major track.

"I like that I'm able to make special offers to create special options for those who really

want it," Bushey said. "But I don't want to say it's a new program."
