"I'm not used to practicing twice a day," she said. "It's hard work, but it's fun. "I'm a little bit nervous, but I love to compete."

As far as lining up swimmers with events, both Kirner and Roberts agree the team is very balanced. While the majority of the swimmers are strongest in freestyle events, the team has solid breaststroke, backstroke and butterfly swimmers, as well as good endurance swimmers for long-distance events and individual medleys, or IM's. IM's are a combination of all four main strokes: butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke and freestyle.

The team looks forward to particularly competitive meets against close rivals Ashland University, which Hillsdale beat by one point last season, and the University of Indianapolis. Kirner said that more than beating other schools, he aims to motivate the women to improve their individual times and, in doing so, qualify for nationals. Four swimmers who qualified for nationals last year are returning, one in backstroke and three in butterfly.

The team will begin the season here at Hillsdale with the annual homecoming Blue-White meet Saturday, Oct. 10. The meet begins at 10 a.m. and is an intra-squad competition. It will also feature relay races in which returning alumni from former swim teams will compete.
