Shooting range open to students through class or club

After last week's Constitution Day Festival, students might be wondering how, outside of shotgun glass, they can have a chance on Hillsdale's firing range.
According to Vice President of Administration Rich Péwé, students should consider joining the Shotgun Club, which meets Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays from 2-5 p.m. There are nominal dues required, Péwé said, and interested students should contact Assistant to the President Mike Harner about joining.
Currently, students cannot use the firing range if they are not part of the club or the current shotgun class. Péwé said the college has employed two part-time instructors who are in charge of gun safety and range supervision and as a result, cannot keep the range open outside of these hours.
"At some point down the road we will be able to have a range master," Péwé said. "For liability reasons, we can't have people go out without a supervisor."
It is possible, however, for a student group or Greek organization to have an event at the shooting range. Péwé said any groups would have to pay for the costs incurred during their event, but the administration would accommodate them as best they can.
Eventually, the college hopes to open the range to all students and possibly community members, Péwé said.
To join the Shotgun Club, contact Harner at mharner@hillsdale.edu.
To arrange a group outing outside of the club, contact Péwé at rpewe@hillsdale.edu.
