Although students can usually weigh in on class and event T-shirts across campus, Kappa Kappa Gamma's latest T-shirt contest presents students with new design possibilities.
Senior T-shirts are designed by the Senior Council during the first few weeks of school, Panhellenic Council Adviser Joanna Wisely said.
"Traditionally we've opened up designs to the Student Activities Board," Director of Student Activities Rebekah Dell said. "We wait until we know what we have planned."
For instance, Dell said the SAB waited until they knew Centralhallapalooza would have an elephant before designing last year's shirt.
The senior class T-shirt also has a strict time table. Wisely said the senior class officers had roughly 14 to 18 days until its first meeting in which time they also had to design and approve a shirt.
Wisely said the first senior class officer meeting depends on when the Alumni Board establishes their fall meeting, as the class officers are under its direction.
The alumni board oversees and funds a good deal of senior activities, such as the senior tailgate, purchasing T-shirts and paying for the nacho bar at the senior tailgate.
"They're elected to represent the senior class," Wisely said. "So I think they've been doing a good job."
This year, senior and class treasurer Nancy Swope designed the senior T-shirt.
Seniors received their class shirts with white lettering on top of a neutral gray body at the senior tailgate two weeks ago. So far, the reception has been mixed.
"Each of us on the Senior Class Council submitted our own ideas for the T-shirts," Swope said. "And that was mine."
Swope said there were a few other ideas as well, such as a caricature of Dr. Arnn. But as the funding for the shirts was donated by the Alumni Association, she decided to play into an alumni theme from the front to back.
Senior Taylor Chapel disagrees, saying seniors aren't alumni.
"Because we haven't graduated yet," Chapel said. "We'll wear it because it says 'seniors' on it."
