In their first home match of the season, the Charger volleyball team defeated Findlay in three games, improving their record to ten wins and one loss. After winning their matches against Tiffin and Ashland last weekend, the team is now 3-0 in the GLIAC. Though the Chargers won the match in three, Findlay did not go down without a fight. Long volleys weaved their way throughout the entire match, the intensity increasing each time the ball crossed from one side of the net to the other.
"That's the best time to be playing volleyball," sophomore Ashlee Crowder said.
After losing the first game 25-14, Findlay kept the score within a couple points for most of the game. Early on in game two, the Chargers had to adjust when sophomore Brogan Wells went down after an intense volley.
"We never practiced or played without her in the back row," junior Sydney Dow said.
Senior Hannah Barrett and freshman Kaleigh Shuster played for Wells the rest of the match. Crowder said it took a few volleys to adjust to having the 6-foot, 1-inch Barrett instead of the 5-foot, 7-inch Wells.
Head Coach Chris Gravel said that while he didn't know the extent of Wells' injury, he hopes to have her back by the weekend. The Chargers finally pulled ahead to win the second game 25-17.
In the third game, the Chargers started strong, taking a 6-1 lead, and were up by as many as ten points.
However, a series of hitting and service errors plagued them to keep the Oilers in the game. Findlay continued to keep in the game, the ball dropping on the Charger side of the net this game as it had on the Oiler side the two games preceding. A key block by Barrett on an Oiler serve ended the game, the Chargers taking it, 25-20.
"I think our nerves got to us," Crowder said.
Knowing they were on the verge of winning the match disrupted the flow of confidence that Crowder said is key to the team's success.
This weekend, they play two more games, starting with Wayne State University Friday. Last year Wayne State beat Hillsdale three times, and head coach Chris Gravel said they will be tough again this year.
"We need to sharpen up a few things [before the weekend]," Gravel said. "If we want to win the division, we've got to beat them."
Crowder said she's happy to be playing Wayne State at Hillsdale to execute revenge in front of a home crowd. Though Dow said it will be a tough game, she said it helped to have Tuesday's home win under their belts.
"It's time for some revenge," she said. "[And] they're going to play just as hard."
