"We didn't really see anything we hadn't practiced for; they just executed their offense well," he said. "I really think part of it was mental errors and part of it was they were in better position to make the plays."
Otterbein also credited Northwood's offense.
"They did a good job with their play selection," he said. "They know we have a pretty good pass rush, given the opportunity. I give their staff credit. It was tough to get pressure because they were getting rid of the ball quickly."
Saturday's matchup had no lack of excitement, as the Hillsdale offense had 455 yards from scrimmage, and the teams combined to score 25 points in the fourth quarter.
Northwood led most of the game, with the largest lead coming three minutes into the third quarter, 28-15. Hillsdale fought back with touchdowns from senior Vinnie Panizzi and junior Andre Holmes to take the lead 29-28.
In the fourth, the teams traded the lead several times. Weatherhead scored on a quarterback keeper to jump ahead 37-31, but Northwood responded with a touchdown with two minutes to go. Hillsdale's final drive was ended by a sack near midfield.
The Chargers will try once again for their second conference win Saturday night under the lights.
Kickoff is at 7 p.m.
