The Hillsdale Forum is officially coming back to campus after a dormant period this past spring. The Forum, a campus opinion newspaper, found itself in the midst of financial and technical problems regarding its publication.
"The publisher raised prices; it was a funding problem," said senior Emilia Huneke-Bergquist, editor of the Forum.
According to Huneke-Bergquist, the newspaper faced difficulty with the publisher and the layout of the journal. Most of the problems were just technical issues, but were enough to hamper the publication of the journal. As a result, The Forum was only able to publish three issues last year. There was some speculation that it might be canceled.
"But we're back," Huneke-Bergquist said.
She said the financial problems The Forum was dealing with are now over.
"We're publishing an issue shortly and we plan to do it as long as we can," said senior Matthew Cole, staff writer for The Forum.
The Forum is independent and privately funded. It is a conservative leaning journal that typically releases four issues per year. Topics range from local political issues to economic affairs to international relations.
"I usually write about international events and politics, taking a conservative stance on the issues," Cole said.
In their dormant period, The Forum writers published articles in an online blog at http://thehillsdaleforum.blogspot.com/. The blog is still functioning and all of the current and past issues can be found on the blog and on The Forum's Twitter. The Forum updates the blog about every week.
The Forum also set up a booth at the Source this year to attract future staff writers for the journal.
"We'd like to continue as a mostly conservative opinion journal with local campus flavor," said junior Calvin Freiburger, staff writer for The Forum.
"Four issues are guaranteed," Huneke-Bergquist said.
She predicted the issues would appear in October, November, February and March.
