Student Federation assembled Thursday for the first meeting of the semester. The federation welcomed seven new representatives to this year's body of deliberation.

"They were eager to jump right in and vocalize their opinions on the issues we considered today," President Brian Painter, a senior, said.

Among those to take her seat for the first time in the federation is junior Kahryn Rombach, substituting for junior class representative Gwendoline Tuma, who is interning in Washington, D.C. this semester.

Lengthy debate followed an appeal from the Lyceum for funding to support their continual effort of promoting "the most important things this campus stands for," as Vice President Marieke van der Vaart, a sophomore and Collegian copy editor, summarized the organization's goals.

Senior Shannon McCleary also petitioned the Federation for funds to support her dorm's plan to meet all freshmen girls by the end of the month, through a "welcome night for each dormitory hall, with desserts, games and introductions between upperclassmen and first-year students."

Painter concluded Thursday's meeting with an enumeration of committees and their responsibilities. From finances to publications and club management to dining incentives, the federation will delegate these matters to various committees directly responsible for each issue.

Campus Improvements Committee Representative sophomore Brittany Baldwin commented on the group's renewed enthusiasm for continuing to address students' individual interests by providing a comment box at the Grewcock Student Union help desk.
