After a tense election last semester in which then junior Andrew Cureton stepped down from his position as Hillsdale College Republicans Chair to run for election to Student Federation president, the new chair and sophomore Jackie Beattey and her fellow Republicans have organized events on campus throughout the year and plan to participate in several events apart from the college.

"We have a lot going on this semester especially," Beattey said. She said the College Republicans plan to attend the Mackinac Republican Leadership Conference, a biannual conference held on Mackinac Island. The conference, which will run from Sept. 25 to 27, will feature presidential nominee Mitt Romney.

In the spring, Beattey said a group will be attending the Conservative Political Action Conference in Washington, D.C. While Hillsdale students always attend, Beattey said the idea this year is to go as a group, hopefully getting larger numbers to attend.
The College Republicans members intend to be more involved on campus this year than they have in the past.

"The main thing we're going to do this year is to connect with our students on campus," Beattey said. "We have a very great opportunity to be a strong group on campus."

To help fuel discussion, the College Republicans will host debates throughout the semester, whether it be within the organization itself or with the Hillsdale College Democrats. By this, Beattey said she wants students to be informed about the stance of the Republican Party.

The group scheduled several speakers to come speak on campus this year to strengthen that connection, including the Republican gubernatorial candidates, the Secretary of State and hopefully some Congressmen.

Also, on Oct. 22, representatives from the National Rifle Association will be on campus on behalf of the College Republicans as a part of their program called "NRA University."

As group efforts increase, sophomore Elliot Gaiser said individuals will also be more involved in the Republican Party this year, a vital part to the survival of the College Republicans.
