In a family that loves to cook, senior Alexander "Zan" Fossel has a special role.
"I'm the sauce guy in my family," he said.
He explained that though he and his family learn from each other, they all have different specialties so they can complement each other's skills and cook together. Maybe that's why Fossel still prefers to cook with other people, and often cooks for dinner or weekend guests.

"Zan makes a great host for things," said sophomore Darby Dickton. "Hospitable, that's a good word to describe him. And considerate."

Dickton said Fossel's whole family loves to host friends. They serve their guests by cooking for them together.

"It's really a hobby for him and his family to cook together as a family," said Dickton.

Fossel said he usually cooks from his head, using whatever ingredients he has on hand.

"You need to be able to adapt," he said.

That creativity allows Fossel to make his own food instead of going to Saga for every meal.

"I think it's great that people don't let homework get in the way of cooking, since it's something we'll have to do later in life," said senior Gina Koshute.

Fossel enjoys inventing new dishes by experimenting with what he has, something anyone on campus can do, he said.

"The important thing is fresh ingredients."
