The Birzer family and the American Studies honorary dedicated a tree to Cecilia Rose Birzer last spring.

The American Studies honorary, Delta Pi Nu, planted a tree in April in honor of Cecilia Rose Birzer, daughter of Professor of History Bradley Birzer. Cecilia was stillborn Aug. 8, 2007. The plaque reads:

"Dedicated to the memory of Cecilia Rose Birzer
August 8, 2007- August 8, 2007
By Delta Pi Nu
on April 25, 2009
'All manner of things shall be well'"

Birzer is faculty adviser to Delta Pi Nu and director of the American Studies program.

Dawn Harris '09, former president of Delta Pi Nu, organized the planting of the budding dogwood. With help from Paul Moreno, associate professor of history, she and her fellow American Studies honorary students arranged the planting unbeknownst to the Birzer family.

"We were deeply honored by the gift from Delta Pi Nu," Birzer said. "Overwhelmed."

Senior Julie Robison, a member of the American Studies honorary, said the tree planting was "very natural for us to do this for Professor Birzer and his family."

"All manner of thing shall be well" holds particular significance for Delta Pi Nu. In Birzer's course "American Order and Disorder," students read T.S. Eliot's Four Quartets. The quote hails from the last quartet, "Little Gidding," which was read at the dedication of the young dogwood.

The tree is at the southeast corner of Delp Hall.
