Hillsdale resident Kevin Conant plans to open a pub downtown in December after the Hillsdale City Council voted to approve a liquor license Tuesday night.

The 45 North St. building building currently houses the New Creations Beauty Salon. Its current owner, Shirley Halsberg, will sell it to Conant, who will turn it into a tavern called Here's to You Pub and Grub, which he hopes will feature karaoke, a dance floor and maybe a pool table.

He said the pub's theme will be "Downtown Hillsdale." Its decor will try to capture the feel of Old Town Hillsdale, and the menu will feature homemade food, like hand-pressed patties, hand-cut fries and hand-battered onion rings. Conant and his wife also developed their own sauce for chili dogs.

The motion passed unanimously and to applause after numerous townspeople voiced approval of the project.

All three co-owners of the Broad Street Downtown Market testified in favor of Conant, as did the owners of the Filling Station Deli and the antique store. Saul Jiminez of Gold Star Taxes pointed out that opening the pub would create another link between the city and Hillsdale College. A former member of the Jonesville City Council argued strongly in favor of approval of the liquor license, saying the pub would be good for the community.

Not everyone in the community approved of the pub's opening. Mayor Michael Sessions reminded city council members that the First Presbyterian Church expressed concern and plans to voice their opposition to the Michigan Liquor License Commission.

Gaining approval from this commission is Conant's next step in getting the legal approval for his business. He expects their approval.
