Portal offers new job listings
The Hillsdale College portal now offers a new Web site displaying employment opportunities. The Web site lists on- and off-campus jobs and temporary employment.
Volume 1 Book's owner Richard Wunsch said he received about 40 calls and gave about 30 interviews after posting job openings on the Web site.
"I had a bunch of applicants," Wunsch said. "I wish I had 20 more jobs. I ended up hiring two people to do databasing, and I hadn't even intended on that."
In previous years, students could search for jobs in a public folder that could be downloaded in Windows; however, students could not download the document onto Macintosh computers, Financial Aid Senior Counselor Jemie Hannon said.
To counter the problem this year, ITS downloaded the job postings on the portal to make it more user-friendly.
Employers looking to hire students can send application requirements to Hannon to post them on the website.
"As employers contact me, I'm putting [the applications] on as fast as I can get them," Hannon said.
Overall, Hannon said she hopes the website makes job opportunities more accessible to students than previously.
"The public folder didn't seem to catch," she said. "I think this will catch."
The new Web site is located under the "students" dropdown menu on the portal.

Greek Picnic Cut
Greek houses cancelled their annual freshman picnic this year, normally held during orientation. Director of Student Activities Rebekah Dell said budget adjustments were a major factor.
Greek houses were responsible for covering the costs of their members' attendance at the picnic.
"Each house simply felt the money spent for each member to attend this event could be re-directed to events that would allow students to get to know each house better," Dell said.
Concerns over the effectiveness of the picnic also prompted its cancellation.
"While the purpose of the picnic was for Greeks to meet freshmen, we found that since it was held so early, it served as more of a reunion for returning Greeks rather than an avenue for Greeks and freshmen to interact," said senior Trevor Shunk, president of Delta Tau Delta fraternity, who also supported the decision to cancel the picnic.
Although the picnic was cancelled, freshmen will still have the opportunity to learn about the Greek system through several events sponsored by the Interfraternity and Panhellenic Councils during the coming year, Dell said.
