Arthurian romance, lynxes and wine: reasons to marry early

'When you meet the person that you want to spend the rest of your life with... there's just something there.'

"We've both changed tremendously since freshman year," he said. "It's like we're different people, but we've changed together."

Looking to the future

For Bressler and McDonald, the decision was easy.

"I'm a simple man with simple needs," Bressler said. "Food, beer and lovin'."

McDonald agreed. "Yeah, I'm pretty simple, too."

Their post-graduation plans include loading a U-Haul, traveling to Ojai, Calif., eventually getting married and living on Bressler's family ranch.

And what are they going to do on a ranch?

"Oh, what aren't we going to do on the ranch," Bressler said. "Well, first and foremost I'm going to start a cattery. We're gonna have servals, caracals, lynxes, Savannah cats -"

"But no bobcats," McDonald interrupted.

"Right, absolutely no bobcats," he confirmed.

While Bressler breeds cats, McDonald intends to bake bread and make wine from the berry bushes scattered across the ranch.

They said they have a formula, and it works.

Why do it?

Marillier and Wagner have a plan, too, but since he's a year ahead of her they're anticipating spending at least a year apart before marrying in 2010.

They said they consider themselves a non-traditional Hillsdale couple. They don't spend every waking hour with each other, Marillier said, but they're basically still dating with the plan to get married.

Wagner pointed out what she said amounts to a very good reasoning for getting engaged young. Why marry at 30, she said, after you've already created a life and routine for yourself. She said her engagement with Marillier and their growing together will ultimately strengthen their relationship.
