A 15-year old juvenile student was taken into custody Thursday after a local resident saw him walking towards Hillsdale High School with a loaded shotgun and called the police.
In response, Hillsdale High School went into a lockdown for 35 minutes from 7:30 a.m. to 8:35 a.m. while the Hillsdale City Police Department and Hillsdale County Sheriff's Department swept downtown looking for the student.
He was found at his home within the city of Hillsdale.
Captian David Braxmaier, of the Hillsdale County Sherrif's Department, said the high school was swept during the lockdown as well in case of a coordinated attack.
"We learned that the threat wasn't there, that the student wasn't there, which was a good thing," Braxmaier said.
Braxmaier said after the student was identified local law enforcement searched the city.
Both the Hillsdale County Sherrif's Department and the Hillsdale City Police Department have trained for such a scenario, Braxmaier said. The difficulty is just getting to the scene
"The situation is if you arrive on scene, you go," Braxmaier said. "You don't wait for the department to show up."
Public Safety Director, Christopher Gutowski said the student is in custody, and an investigation to the situation is ongoing.
