Mossey Library chairs, keyboards, hand rails and arm rests sometimes get sticky, as if covered by film or residue, Library Director Dan Knoch said. It probably results from those surfaces going weeks between detail cleanings, said Vicky Phetteplace, superintendent of custodial services.

Phetteplace said the library requires so much cleaning that custodians cannot detail-clean every surface every day.

"It's such a massive area it would probably take a week and a half before you'd rotate back to the original areas," she said. "[Detail cleaning] insures that there's no oversight or cleaning missed."

A four-person custodial team cleans Mossey every weeknight after the building closes, often in addition to several other buildings during their shifts, Knoch said.

The team comprises a restroom specialist, a vacuum specialist, a utility specialist and a light-duty specialist. They conduct a routine clean daily and also a detail cleaning of certain sections, Phetteplace said. She said they spend nearly two hours on the library every night.

"They hit the high points, empty trash, clean the restrooms, mop the floor as needed - they do a good job," Knoch said.

Phetteplace welcomes students' comments about the cleaning.

"If [students] ever see anything that's not up to standard - please just bring it to our attention," she said.
