Hey, Saga line-cutters: Cut it out
Maria Schmitt
Issue date: 3/12/09 Section: Opinion
It was your typical Monday in Saga. Over-crowded, loud, right at rush time. I did not expect any foul play. Then, the unthinkable happened.
I don't normally use opinion pieces to whine, but the time has come for some opining.
I waited patiently for a chicken patty sandwich, an item any student on campus could verify as one of the best and rarest delicacies the college has to offer.
There I stood in an already ridiculously long, non-uniform, amoeba-like line with a friend for probably five minutes.
In front of me, among 20 other students, was a female athlete of an unnamed sport.
Out of the blue, three of this athlete's friends came and stood with said first athlete.
Now hold on here.
Since when is it OK to cut at least 15 people in a line INSIDE Saga, on a Monday (the busiest lunch day), when one of the most coveted meals is being served?
The answer: It's not.
I was appalled by these three students.
My friend somehow sidled his way back ahead of the group, which I also don't approve of, although one could see it as simply getting even, which could be seen as "better" than cutting. It's not "putting them in their place," it's cutting. Just with a different intent.
The fact that the students were athletes really has no bearing on the situation, except that they were all taller and much more fit than me, which was intimidating.
If the line were for something less exciting, on a Thursday or Friday, or not during rush time, this would not have angered me so. But chicken patties don't come every day. In fact, they don't even come every Monday! It's almost as bad as taking the last two pieces of pizza instead of just one when someone is standing next to you, waiting to take the other piece.
Not only did I have to wait for three extra people to make their way through the line who had to wait for at least five minutes less than I did, the 20 or so people behind me had to wait as well.
