The women's GLIAC championship trophy now rests at Hillsdale College after last weekend.

The women's basketball team defeated both Grand Valley State University and Michigan Technological University in the Upper Peninsula last weekend, clinching the GLIAC title and preparing them for NCAA play.

They are seeded second in the Midwest region and are ranked third nationally after beating the two teams 90-68 and 81-69, respectively.

Athletic Director Don Brubacher said these were the two best games he thinks the team has played all season.

"They were totally team-oriented," Brubacher said. "They found new ways to make each other better. It was a joy to watch."

This weekend, the team travels to Northern Kentucky University where they will first play the University of Indianapolis in the first round of the NCAA Division II Midwestern regional tournament Friday. The Chargers beat the Greyhounds 77-63 during Thanksgiving break.

Head coach Claudette Charney said Indianapolis is a good team, and the Chargers will have to be at the top of their game to win.

"We can't have a game like against Lake Superior State University [last Tuesday]," she said. "If we do, we won't win."

Last time the Chargers played the Greyhounds, Charney said, junior Janay Miller was ill and not able to play very much, which put them at a disadvantage. This time around, the Chargers know what to expect from Indianapolis.

"They have a good sophomore post player," she said. "We must control her, just as they must control us."

Charney said the team will continue to ride out their wins this past weekend and practice as hard as they can this week.

"When you're playing well, you want to keep playing well," she said. "We want to maintain our intensity."

Miller said the team has improved a lot over the season, which means the Huskies have improved too.

"We're only guaranteed one game," she said. "If we lose, we're done. We have to focus on them."

This weekend's games will be broadcast for free on the NCAA Web site, Charney said.

Saturday's epic win over Michigan Tech brought the Chargers to an even higher best-ever record of 27-3.
