Senior Dan Miloch, an art major, said Springer has already changed the department significantly.
"Since he's entered, he's been bringing the graphics department up to date," Miloch said. "He's got fresh ideas, excitement and experience."
After Professor of Art Patric Fourché died from a heart attack last January, Springer filled his position, Art Department Chairman Sam Knecht said.
For the spring semester, that only involved teaching a few graphic design classes as a stop-gap measure. But the experience sparked Springer's interest in a full-time position, and Knecht offered him Fourshé's former job, beginning last semester.
His efforts to "update" the department included a new graphics lab, which Springer and Art Lecturer Doug Coon designed together - though Springer called Coon the "prime mover and shaker where digital upgrades were concerned." It contains 14 student computers, which senior Mark Willard described as "top level," compared to the previous lab's six computers.
Miloch said Springer offers "cutting edge" classes that complement the new lab: this semester, Web design and two computer graphics classes.
Springer graduated from Hillsdale College in 1994 with an art major, then attended Savannah College of Art and Design. He focused on illustration and pastels, but also became acquainted with graphic design.
This association connected him with a weekend job at Kinko's, designing national newspaper advertisements in California, and freelance work in Michigan. He considers his previous position as senior designer for Thomson Tax and Accounting the "zenith of his career." On the side, he maintained his streak with pastels and other media.
He taught and presented demonstrations at Jackson Civic Art Association and Ann Arbor Art Center, then returned to Hillsdale in 2005, at Knecht's request, to teach a watercolor class.
