Along with traditional care packages and Charger Change, parents now can supply students with prepaid coupon cards redeemable at A.J.'s Café.

The "Jam-n-Java" card entitles students to three grande espresso drinks, two large dishes of ice cream, a milkshake or any combination of those six items. The card is punched for each item purchased. It can be used at any time during the school year.

"It's discounted a little bit," said Kevin Kirwan, general manager of Saga, Inc. "We wanted to come up with something students might appreciate."

Kirwan said Saga introduced the car last semester.

"We've had a number of people use them," said freshman Sage Tomlinson, a student employee at A.J's. She sees the Jam-n-Java card more than she does regular punch cards for coffee drinks, she said.

But what sounds like a sweet deal has one snag: Only parents can purchase the card, A.J.'s Manager Carolyn Ford said.

Because it's offered as an exam treat through Saga, Inc., the card isn't on the menu at A.J.'s. and students cannot buy it for themselves.

Parents can purchase the card for $15.95 by calling Saga or accessing the college Web site.

To order the Jam-n-Java card by phone, call (517) 437-4533, or go online to http://tinyurl.com/new-card.
