Men's IM championships begin; women up soon

March Madness is right around the corner, but the postseason for Hillsdale intramurals started last night and in epic fashion.

The Meatheads, a team filled with Charger football players, sparked the opening festivities of the tournament with forward sophomore Andre Holmes throwing down a thunderous dunk. Holmes and his Meatheads went on to embarrass the Viscous Vischers in a one-sided 59-35 victory.

An overtime thriller followed the first set of games, with the Faculty team looking to repeat their championship win from last year. Playing without 6'8" monster, senior Jared Veldheer, team Bachelor Party blew a 22-point lead to throw the game into overtime. Charger basketball alum and current assistant coach, Dan Evans, was the high point man on the night, nailing several key 3-point shots, and sending Faculty to the next round of playoffs.

Other teams advancing on the men's side are team Detroit Lions, led by guards junior Kevin Boyle and senior Tom Thistleton and team Sigma Chi, led by ex-Charger basketball player, junior Dustin Reynolds.

The women's intramural tournament will begin next week. The men's final four will play Monday night at 9 p.m.

Baseball in Florida for season opener

After having their initial trip to Indianapolis cancelled due to weather last weekend, the baseball team will begin their season in a much warmer climate. They arrived in Winter Haven, Fla., early this morning for what head coach Paul Noce called an "extended weekend trip." This trip has been a part of the spring schedule for the last eight years, Noce said, because it is the best way to assure the team can actually get out on a diamond free of snow and ice. The cold weather is always a battle for Hillsdale. After being regulated to drills inside the gym for most of the year, it could be a difficult transition for the team to play five games in three days, Noce said.

Senior Brandon Hubbard said adjusting to outdoor light after practicing inside, the difference in ground balls depending on the ground's surface and temperature are all factors players will adjust to.

Noce said the flurry of games will allow him to shuffle around the lineup and try some players at new positions. He is still trying to solidify his starting outfield.

The Chargers' first opponent is University of Nebraska at Omaha. Senior and team captain Jesse Smith said these games count toward their regional rankings, and they will play to win, but the ultimate goal is more long term.

"The point is to get on the field and get our mechanics back, so guys can get locked in," he said. "Then when we play our conference games, the games that matter for our playoffs, we will have our feet underneath us."

Hillsdale will kick off their conference schedule against Grand Valley State University March 21.
