This weekend, Charger softball starts off their spring season with a double header against Southern Indiana Saturday and Bellarmine University Sunday.

Head coach Jamie Meyers, who is in her second season, said the team looks forward to a lively season.

With six new freshmen joining the team this year, Meyers said she excited to see what they bring to the field and the dynamics of the team. Playing time will be determined by each girl's performance in the first few games.

"I expect we're going to have a couple of freshmen who are going to step up," Meyers said.

While softball has a fall and a spring season, the fall season is short and emphasizes physical conditioning. Now, as the team prepares for the opening games of the spring season, the focus is more on technique and drills.

Sophomore Maura Altham, an outfielder, said weather conditions have prevented the team from practicing on their own field. While they have been able to practice several times on the football field, practices are mostly held in the gym at the Roche Sports Complex.

"We'll do situational stuff," Altham said. "Mostly offensive and defensive drills."

The Chargers are scheduled to play their first home game against Tiffin University, March 29.

"We've got a really solid young team," Meyers said. "They've got this attitude like, all they want to do is win."
