Erin Gillespie-Bunting, a former Charger distance running, encouraged the indoor track and field team this past Monday, as they approach the most important weeks of their season - GLIAC Championships Friday and Saturday and NCAA Division II Championships in two weeks.
"She gave us some great things to think about, and I know, personally, that it was a big step in mental preparation," men's captain Jared Krout, a junior, said. "We'll do some more things later in the week to get ready mentally as well."
A solid showing last weekend at Grand Valley State University, led by a stellar performance from junior Katie Hunt - who earned a personal best and a new school record as she took first in the 60 meter hurdles - bodes well for the next three weeks as the Chargers head to Saginaw Valley State University this weekend and Houston, Texas for nationals March 13.
"I am extremely excited after Friday's meet at Grand Valley because, although I had my best performances this season, I made a few simple mistakes that would have made a significant difference," Hunt said. "Everyone is excited [for the Conference meet]. We can feel our bodies recovering from the stress of the past couple months, and we are all anticipating to leave conferences with our best performances. The energy level there is always astonishing - it's the biggest high there is."
Head coach Bill Lundberg said training has gone well during the last few weeks, and he is confident his team will be ready come Friday.
"Although it is parent's weekend, we are going to head to Saginaw and represent ourselves and our fellow students," Lundberg said. "We will be striving for a lot of personal goals, while aiming to perform the best for our team."
Lundberg also said everyone - not just established top performers such as Krout, senior Andrew Dodson, junior Aaron Falk and sophomore Marta Scheiwe, but younger members like sophomore Amanda Putt will be ready to step it up tomorrow.
