An article in this week's Collegian introduces the Web site portal that will soon replace the current Up the Hill site.

I took the liberty to check out the new site and, while I did expect some improvement, had no idea it would be so useful.

Students are prompted to enter their username and password as the Web address begins to load. This is the only time usernames and passwords are required. No more entering it at least twice to access things like time entry for on-campus jobs or to check grades.

Everything that used to be spread out across the vast and often convoluted old Hillsdale network system now neatly branches from a single Web page.

The main page not only links me to WebAdvisor, it updates me on my e-mail, gives me the current weather, lists my classes and when they are and lists current news stories and college events.

The main page also features a photo from somewhere around campus which changes every time the page loads.

According to the News story in this week's issue, students will be able to subscribe to certain announcements from clubs and organizations.

A few clicks allow me to sign up for e-mail announcements about campus news and events.

When ITS updated the entire college Web site, I got excited. Now that we're using an entirely new portal that is more accessible, more condensed and more conducive to an integrated campus life, I am even more pleased.

Online bill pay, online time entry, online registration and an entirely new student portal? Keep it coming, Hillsdale.
