Several hundred old friends will sit on tables with us this semester, Saga Inc. General Manager Kevin Kirwan said.
Scratched and murky, old beverage cups have been brought in by the hundreds to stand in the depopulated ranks of their chunkier counterparts.
"I purchased 3,300 cups last year for opening," Kirwan said. "We're down to 700 or less now."
Almost an inch higher than the old cups, the new cups chip and break on the under-ridge of the tray belt when stacked, sometimes jamming the tray belt in the process.
"The quick fix was to go to the Dow Center so students didn't scramble for cups," Kirwan said.
He recommends two options for students: lay cups down on the trays or don't stack them.
Long-term, Kirwan says he's researching alternatives. He holds up one wider, shorter, heavier option.
"Not too big for a lady's hand?" he asks.
Kirwan says tray-belt geometry wasn't the only factor in cup depopulation.
"You see them here, there and yon," he said. "To all students, Saga makes a humble plea. Bring in your cups. Like bring out your dead in Monty Python," he added, helpfully.
