Last Thursday at home, the Chargers beat Ferris State University 88-64, a win which brought them to 18-2 through 20 games; the best ever 20-game record in the history of Hillsdale women's basketball.
The Chargers controlled Ferris the entire game, jumping out to an 11-point lead right after the tip off.
The team also dominated in Saturday's much anticipated game against Grand Valley State University. The Chargers won 75-66 in front of the largest home crowd of the season.
"Grand Valley was huge," head coach Claudette Charney said. "It was a big game but it doesn't define our season."
Charney said her girls were able to win because they stuck to the basics.
"We played great defense and were prepared for their offense," she said. "We held their runs and led from start to finish."
Junior Janay Miller said competition against the GVSU Lakers - in any sport - is nerve-wracking.
"Their whole program is prestigious," Miller said. "We were definitely looking forward to it. We wanted to play that game to get some revenge."
Miller said shots and free throws made at the end of the game allowed the team to pull away for the win.
Senior Katie Cezat broke her own season record for points in a game twice last week. Thursday she scored 37 points and Saturday 38. In the second half alone against the Lakers, Cezat put up 27 points.
Freshman Chelsea Harrison was also a top scorer with three 3-pointers in a five-minute span Saturday.
This week, the Chargers continue with two games at home, tonight against Wayne State University and Saturday against Northwood University. The Chargers already beat these teams, 79-62 and 80-76 respectively.
Miller emphasized that though these teams have been defeated, anyone can beat anyone in the GLIAC - a testament to tough competition in the conference.
"Wayne State is always a dangerous team," she said. "We hope to make it a little more convincing of a win."
Charney said while Wayne State is ranked toward the bottom of the GLIAC (they are No. 5 in the South Division) the Chargers can't take the game lightly.
"We can't look past Wayne State right now," she said.
Currently, the Chargers are first in the GLIAC South Division and second overall.
Cezat was named the South Division Player of the Week Monday for the eighth time this season.
