Circle K drive a sucess, group says

The Hillsdale College chapter of Circle K, the collegiate level of Kiwanis, finished its second annual Mott's Children's Hospital of Ann Arbor drive Monday.

Accepting donations ranging from matchbox cars to coloring books, the college's Circle K group filled two boxes combined with Hillsdale County's Kiwanis drive, filling three eight-foot tables, said Circle K President Sandra Pooley, a junior.

"Overall, it was very successful today," she said, adding that a representative for the hospital gave a presentation Tuesday at the local Kiwanis meeting expressing gratitude for the community's generosity.

In addition to donations from students, Cirle K members also stuffed 32 dolls for the drive, said Secretary Renee Nestorak, a junior. Med Buddies are blank dolls used to demonstrate operations to children.

Professor commits life to students

On Tuesday at 9:10 a.m., tornado sirens set off in Hillsdale. Professor of Classics Lorna Holmes administered her morning quiz anyway, telling her Greek students she would go down with them if they were dying. Later, campuswide e-mails instructed students to disregard the sirens.

Students visit elderly, decorate Valentine's cupcakes

About 15 women from Olds Residence will visit the elderly at the Hillsdale Medical Center to decorate cupcakes on Valentine's Day this Saturday at 10 a.m. Many of the same women threw an Operation Christmas Child party last semester, and have discussed completing service projects each month. In the future, they may hold an Easter egg hunt for children.

Organizer Brittany Baldwin, a freshman, said other students are welcome to join their informal group to also donate time and money to cheer people who might otherwise be forgotten on holidays. Those interested should e-mail her at bbaldwin@hillsdale.edu.

Night sky report from the Astronomy Club

In the month of February, Saturn sits well for observation in Leo, south of the main body of the lion. Look for it in the eastern sky at mid-evening. Although it pales in comparison with Venus in the western sky, Saturn is brighter than any nearby star and doesn't tend to twinkle, which should help identify it.

Tower Light seeks submissions

The campus literary magazine is currently recruiting student submissions before its midnight deadline on March 7. A team of editors will consider all entries anonymously, from the following categories: short stories, poetry, non-fiction prose (short, non-academic, reflective essays), translations of the above categories into English and photography. Both a color and a black-and-white version of each photograph should be submitted.

Editors are looking for sincerity and depth of thought with an attention to literary technique, not a particular set of opinions, Tower Light Editor in Chief Erin Risch said.

"Instead of privileging a specific style or theme, we want to make literary quality the standard for admission into the Tower Light," Risch wrote in an e-mail to The Collegian, "so that the reading experience is both enlightening and enjoyable for all. Hillsdale students are capable of real art, and we want to showcase that."

E-mail Risch with questions: erisch@hillsdale.edu.

Corrections:

In our Jan. 29 issue, photos accompanying the story "You can always trust the ball in her hands" were miscredited to Andrew Dodson. Photos taken by both Andrew Dodson and William Clayton printed with that article. The correct photo credits are online.

The Charger Swim and Dive team left for the GLIAC conference meet Wednesday. On Jan. 29, The Collegian reported that the team would compete in one week when the event was two weeks away.

The article, "Student workers at Howard switch from salary to hourly pay," printed Feb. 5, states: "Controller Patrick Flannery declined to comment." It should have read, "Controller Patrick Flannery was unavailable for comment." Before the article printed, Flannery spoke and e-mailed The Collegian communicating his inability to meet a reporter for comment until Feb. 6.
