The women's basketball team brought their offensive and defensive A-game to the court last week, unfortunately, for two different games. But they still won both, bringing them to 12-2 in the GLIAC.
The Chargers crushed Saginaw Valley State University 98-48 at home last Thursday, showing amazing offensive firepower.
In addition to the 50-point win at home, the Chargers set a team record for the number of assists during a game, with 34 assists on 40 made goals. The previous record of 29 was set in 2000.
Ten assists of her own brought junior guard Brooke Knight to conference leader for assists per game.
"I'd much rather pass and set someone up to score than shoot myself," Knight said. "It's kind of my role as guard to help my team."
Knight said her team's high scoring ability "makes my job easy."
Head coach Claudette Charney said Knight makes good decisions when she gets the ball.
"She passes the ball to the right person at the right time," she said. "She's the floor general, like the quarterback on a football team. You can't win without good guards."
Saturday, the Chargers beat Lake Superior State University, away, by 12 points, 61-49. This was an improvement over their 10-point win against the same team earlier in the season.
The LSSU game proved to be a challenge, Charney said.
"That game was very close," she said. "We had to weather their storm."
The Chargers managed to keep control of the score, despite attempts from LSSU to close the point gap.
"It was maybe the best defensive game we've played in a long time," Charney said. "We didn't shoot as well, but we shot well enough."
This week, the Chargers play two of their remaining eight regular conference games at home. Of the eight, six are home games.
Freshman Chelsea Harrison said the team cannot look past the Ferris State University game Thursday night to playing Grand Valley State University yet, despite the fact they lost to GVSU in December.
