The Charger swim team swept up their final regular season victory against St. Mary's University at Saturday's last home meet. This was the Chargers' final competition before the GLIAC conference meet next week.

"Everyone really stepped it up and looks forward to GLIAC," senior and co-captain Ali Lanctot said.

Head coach Kurt Kirner said he saw higher competitive edge emerge from the team this weekend, which will be beneficial for conferences, which begin Wednesday.

"They showed the type of competitiveness I like to have them at," Kirner said. "We provided a lot of our own competition, and there's a certain amount of team achievement when you've maximized the opportunities."

Kirner added that each athlete was either at or near her best times for the season, and Hillsdale took either first or second in all but three events.

"It shows no matter where coach puts us, we're ready to take on the challenge and swim our best," said freshman Linda Okonkowski, named GLIAC Swimmer of the Week on Monday.

Standout individuals with personal and season bests were freshman Nikki Dyer in the 1000-yard freestyle, Okonkowski in both the 200 IM and 500 free events, and senior and co-captain Anne Verhoef who outswam the competition by at least 25 yards in the 200 freestyle.

"It was a great way to end a dual meet season, and a great indication to what conference will bring." Okonkowski said. "Things are falling into place."

Senior Meghan McDonald, also co-captain, said the team was very excited since it was senior day and was extremely supportive of each other, at this meet and during the last four years. Kirner considered the meet to be kind of a bittersweet moment due to the significance of this senior class.

"I came in here, and (initially) didn't have any seniors," Kirner said. "But, because of the class this group of athletes showed, I was very fortunate to have them for two seasons. We'll be losing a lot of talent. It was an overall team effort. They all felt they had roles to fill, and they will have a significant impact on all those who follow."

GLIACs are actually in TWO weeks, not one. Who's supposed to be fact checking these things?
