The Chargers rebounded with a win against Northern Michigan University Saturday, 78-67.
Bad calls during the Michigan Tech game frustrated both players and fans, but the team cannot credit the loss to bad calls, senior Claire Aubrey said.
"You can't blame the officials," Aubrey said. "We can't use that as an excuse. There were things we didn't execute."
Senior Katie Cezat pointed out that both of their losses (the other to Grand Valley State University, 71-69), have been by only two points each.
"We are very capable of beating good teams," Cezat said. "We just need to prove it."
Head coach Claudette Charney agreed.
"We didn't defend as we should have," she said of the Michigan Tech game. "We can't rely on the calls of officials to determine the outcome of the game."
Charney did express frustration to some calls made during the game.
The game was a back-and-forth fight, eventually culminating with a Michigan Tech basket 1.8 seconds before the end of the game.
Saturday, the team started out behind but pulled ahead of Northern Michigan halfway through the first half.
They maintained the lead throughout the second half, sometimes leading by only one point, sometimes by 10.
Aubrey and Cezat said they love having the crowd's support during home games.
"It helps to have people on your side," Cezat said.
The two said fans at many other colleges are much more brutal in their in-game comments.
Tonight, the women play at Ashland University and Saturday at Tiffin University.
Neither game should be extremely difficult, Cezat said, but they won't be easy either.
"We're going to have to defend," Charney said.
This year, the Chargers play every conference team twice, something Aubrey and Cezat said they appreciate.
"We get to know the teams well," Aubrey said. "We get to know what we need to do."
The two especially look forward to playing Michigan Tech again.
