Revolving laundry drama

With all the recent ruckus over little things like the economic crisis and presidential inauguration, it's time Hillsdale focused on the real issue around campus: laundry room drama.

It seems that some students simply don't understand the rules of cleaning their clothes.

"Someone left the lint in the dryer and got it all over my clothes," freshman Elliot Gaiser said.

Students reported laundry soap slopped on the machine lids, and clothes left in the dryers after they're done.

Senior Fritz Nuffer said while the rest of Galloway Dormitory can get pretty rowdy, the laundry room is generally pretty tame.

"We did have people in there for [a dorm party] one year. Everyone was sitting on the washers and dryers, drinking tea and eating scones," he said.

Galloway boys aren't the only ones hosting laundry room parties. A few girls in McIntyre Residence decided it might be fun to host a rave using the laundry room as the primary location.

"My suitemate, Betsy Woodruff, and I planned to have a rave/dance party after the Battle of the Bands, then I suddenly thought of the laundry room as a great idea," said sophomore Emily Wagner. "After midnight, people began trickling in, until at one point there were 33 people in the dinky little laundry room.

"Some people danced on top of the washing machines and I think one guy decided to stage dive. Everyone cheered when someone new walked in the room, and we counted down to 1 a.m., when visitation ended."

The McIntyre laundry room, however, isn't all fun and games. One girl even caught her clothes on fire after leaving them in the dryer too long.

Theresa Martin, McIntyre house director, attributed laundry room drama to a lack of space.

"We have four machines for 104 girls," she said. "It can get frustrating."

All in all, the most basic principles to avoiding laundry room drama are easy: Students should clean up after themselves, remove lint out of the dryer, and take their clothes from the machines promptly.

For guys, the solution is even simpler.

"Just get a girlfriend and make her do it," Martin said. "She won't mind."
