Connor said student complaints about Christmas break being too long prompted the survey, but about 56 percent of students responded that they preferred the longer Christmas break.
Connor said this may be because so many students live far away.
"If they're going to buy a plane ticket, they may as well stay the extra week," he said.
This year's shorter break will change some students' plans.
Sophomore Toby Williamson, who fabricates countertops for his pastor in Virginia, said it could be a problem.
"For those of us who have to work over break, we now have less hours to work," Williamson said.
Senior Becky Nieboer said she will not be able to work as many hours at Pigeon Creek Lodge in Ottawa County, Mich., but because the semester began later this year, she had an extra week to work in the summer.
"I don't think it's such a big deal," she said.
Sophomore Jo Burns said she prefers the shorter break.
"My classes are fun, my friends are cool and I just really enjoy being here," Burns said.
