The publications sent out by Hillsdale College departments and the material on the school's Web site will receive a facelift, after employees finish sorting through thousands of pictures a photography firm took during homecoming weekend.
Two employees of FJ Gaylor Photography came from Hartford, Conn. to take the photos, Associate Director of Admissions Fred Schebor said.
"We have an outstanding library of photos, but if we had an outside perspective it would perhaps be beneficial," he said. "I am currently going through the 4,500 photos, selecting ones that have some potential for admissions publications."
He said they chose FJ Gaylor because it specializes in photos that capture students in natural and spontaneous situations. Its only two employees, father and son Fred and Joe Gaylor, take pictures for college admissions marketing and recruitment purposes.
They took photos in classrooms and throughout campus from Thursday through Saturday of homecoming weekend, Schebor said.
He said they knew how to take pictures without being disruptive.
"These guys are experts in stealth," he said.
FJ Gaylor Photography had no prior ties with Hillsdale, Schebor said. In fact, they had only a cursory knowledge of the college.
"They were not intimately familiar, which I think attributed to the fresh look they could bring," he said.
Next Schebor will send the photos to Art Director for External Affairs Angela Lashaway, who will organize them by subject and put them on Cumulus, the digital photo library where all campus-event photographs - 67,000 of them - are stored.
"We're in the process of redesigning admissions materials," Lashaway said. Other than that, however, she's not sure how these particular photos will be used.
"We haven't gotten that far," she said, adding that photos are only one element of the design process.
In the meantime, F.J. Gaylor Photography has posted some images from their time at Hillsdale on their Web blog. Students can view them by clicking here.
