I may complain at times, but I love every minute of my wildly busy Hillsdale routine. We all are familiar with it in some form, a tangle of classes, work, volunteering, fun and sleep. It's why I came to Hillsdale - to be challenged and stretched in ways previously unimaginable.

However, every once in a while, it is necessary to break out of the routine. Convocation occurs only once every semester and offers faculty, staff and students the ability to celebrate the finer things in life.

Unfortunately, many do not understand the purpose of convocation and see no reason to fit another item into their busy schedules. So here is not only one reason to attend convocation, but 10:

10 Escape the long lunch line at Saga.

9 It is doctor recommended and optometrist approved. (Seriously, your eyes need rest from looking at a book or the computer screen.)

8 Have fun seeing friends and professors you never get to see.

7 Listen to Chamber Choir sing.

6 Find out which Greek house won the Scholarship Cup.

5 Find out the professor of the year.

4 Reflect on your purpose here at Hillsdale College.

3 Experience the tradition of Convocation by being reminded of its heritage.

2 Celebrate the accomplishments of Hillsdale and the students.

1 Listen to Professor of History Tom Conner deliver an amazing speech.

So expand your horizons and come to convocation at College Baptist Church on Nov. 13, at 11:00 a.m. Come to reflect on who we are and what we are doing here at Hillsdale. Rediscover why you feel a sense of pride every time you see Central Hall or tell someone you go to Hillsdale College. Come to have fun. Come to break away from your routine.
