Sudden death overtime - first team to score wins. The McIntyre intramural football team has the ball on the one-yard line. It's fourth down. It's no good.
The Young Guns took possession and with two quick plays - one being the ever-so-crafty "statue of liberty play" - marched down the field and into the end zone to win the women's championship for the second straight year Sunday afternoon.
"It was intense," McIntyre captain Marisa Nehlson, a junior, said.
Despite jumping out to a 7-0 lead in the first half, McIntyre was unable to hold on for a victory.
"The game was frustrating in the first half," junior Young Gun member Abby Ashmore said. "But we came out strong in the second half. It was really fun. I was happy we won for our freshmen."
The McIntyre team did not let the loss loom over their great season though.
"We were happy to be there in the first place," junior Priscilla Motley said. "Given the way we started the season."
Motley and Nehlson said McIntyre was "momentarily bummed" but was lifted right back up again thanks to an inspiring pep talk by their coaches, seniors Tony Carabajal and Chris Wafful.
