This Saturday Alpha Omega Women's Care Center will host its annual comedy show to raise funds for the center.

John Reist, professor of Christianity and literature and one of the event's organizers, said he hopes the event will raise not only money for the center, but also awareness of its ministry.

"Our ministry is dedicated to saving the lives of unborn children," he said. "Our center provides counsel to [women with] crisis pregnancies. I do this to do whatever I can to overcome what the Pope has entreated us to reject and that is the 'culture of death.'"

What's Reist's definition of a crisis pregnancy?

"Every pregnancy is a crisis, you know that, right?" Reist said with a smile.

Reist formerly served on Alpha Omega's executive board, and has counseled numerous women about abortion. He cited statistics reporting that most women who had abortions later felt they were wrong to do so.

"I'm for the babies and I'm for having babies," Reist said.

Junior Hannah Falldorf, an Alpha Omega volunteer, said she hopes fundraisers such as these will allow the center to expand to a full medical center, offering services such as ultrasounds and testing for sexually-transmitted diseases.

Stand-up comic Donna East will perform at the event.

"[She's] really funny, but it's the family kind of humor," Falldorf said.

East said Alpha Omega's cause hits home with her for two reasons: She recently gave birth to a daughter, and she was a "crisis pregnancy baby" herself.

"My mom was pregnant with me before she was married," East said. "So, it kind of came full-circle. She could've made other choices … in that case, I wouldn't be here at all."

East encouraged everyone to come not only because of the cause, but also because she wants to make them laugh.

"A good belly laugh burns 35 calories," East said. "You may as well come laugh with us for an hour and skip the gym that day."

The event will start at 7 p.m. this Saturday at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, located at 2551 W. Bacon St. in Hillsdale. Tickets cost $10 each, and are available at the church office or by calling (517) 439-5217 or (517) 437-7020. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and there will be a musical performance before the show.
