Saga, Inc. offers take-out meals for students who can't get to the cafeteria during mealtimes.
Students who have classes, work or other activities through lunch or dinnertime meals should ask card-swiper Steve Casai for a meal order form. They can choose what type of bread, cheese, filling and condiments they would like on a sandwich, as well as a drink, salty snack, fruit or vegetable and dessert.
Salads are also available, but only by special request to General Manager Kevin Kirwan. The option is not listed on the sheet. Ultimately, students must choose between a salad and a sandwich.
Students should fill out and return forms at least 48 hours before the meal they are going to miss. They can sign up to receive meals regularly, or just once.
Saga has offered take-out meals for several years, but only recently gave students the option of filling out a form to specify exactly what they want, Kirwan said.
He said Jill Smith, who prepares the meals, works hard to make sure students get exactly what they order. Students can ask her for other special requests between meals. For instance, egg salad is not one of the sandwich-filling options listed on the meal form, but students can request it for the days Jill makes it.
Take-out meals are not free; students write their ID numbers on the form and pay for the meal just like they would if they ate in the dining hall. They should also make sure they don't forget to pick up the meals; if they forget too many times, their orders will be cancelled.
"Three strikes and you're out," Kirwan said.
