Major: Art, possibly a double major with English
Saewert's portfolio contains pencil drawings, an impressionistic-style oil painting, some etchings and a self-portrait in colored pencils.
Though she received an art scholarship from Hillsdale College, She has not received awards for her artwork.
"I was going to enter one in a show but you had to put a price on it and my mom was afraid it would be sold," she says.
Her style reflects her detail-oriented personality, Saewert says.
Although Saewert says she needs to work on her drawing skills, she is currently in Oil Painting I where she enjoys learning oil technique.
"Anything where I can get my hands dirty, I'm excited to take it," she says.
Name: Moriah Morgan
Home: Hollywood, Md.
Major: Art, music minor
Morgan, also in Oil Painting I, has taken private art lessons for nearly seven years.
Morgan says her style is very realistic.
"I try to put in as much detail as possible - I try to see everything there is in a picture."
In 2006, Morgan entered the Congressional Arts Competition. Her artwork was chosen by House Majority Leader and Maryland Sate Rep. Steny Hoyer to hang in the U.S. Capitol Building.
"He's a Democrat, but whatever," Morgan said.
The traditional art program at Hillsdale attracter her here. She says she's interested in having a good balance and wants to be well-rounded.
Her favorite medium is colored pencil, but Morgan also likes watercolors.
Although she finds the switch from her familiar mediums to oils a challenge, Morgan is up to the task, she said.
"More and more as I paint I know there is always stuff you can do to improve. I used to juts sit down and be done with a project. Here it's an ongoing process."
Name: Frances Anderson
Home: Lincoln, Neb.
Major: Double major in biology and art
Anderson is in Drawing I this semester.
"Drawing's interesting. I didn't think I'd like it that much," Anderson says. Her favorite medium is oil paint.
"Oil painting is very forgiving," she said. "You have the ability to start over."
Anderson's portfolio contains mostly oil paintings and some sketches, she says. She received a Hillsdale art scholarship for her work, but hasn't won any other awards.
Anderson's style is strongly impressionistic, she says. And her interest in biology contributes to her art as well.
"[You can] definitely see how they work together," she said.
Name: Nell O'Leary
Home: Tecumseh, Mich.
Major: Art
O'Leary's favorite mediums are pen and ink and acrylic paint. She sent in both a digital portfolio for departmental review and brought a portfolio to a prospective visit to campus. She receieved a departmental scholarship based on her work.
Also taking Drawing I, O'Leary is excited to explore as much as possible in art, she says.
But she isn't yet sure what her own style consists of.
"It's very scribbly," she said.
O'Leary loves impressionism and realism, she says, and is excited for next semester, when she plans to take Drawing II.
"It's good to have the fundamentals, but I can't wait to be in a more advanced class to build on what I already know," she says.
