New vehicles on the block

Hillsdale College has decided to lease small, fuel-efficient Japanese vehicles to fulfill its on-campus transportation needs.

The vehicles only cost $4,000 to 5,000 each, but maintenance has not been able to get them licensed for road use.

Director of Security Mike Wertz said a maintenance worker was driving one of the vehicles to get the front end aligned when he was pulled over by a state policeman because the vehicle did not have a license plate.

Wertz said the laws regarding these vehicles are complicated.

"They're not considered items of husbandry," he said. "They don't pass crash tests or safety tests … but they're fully equipped like cars."

For this reason, Wertz said the police officer had to call his post commander to ask what to do. Wertz said the officer did not write up the driver, but the school agreed not to use the vehicles on the road until they are licensed.

Despite licensing problems, Wertz said the vehicles have their perks: low cost, high gas mileage, efficiency in transporting materials around campus and a classy design.

"They are cool," Wertz said.

Three bikes broken, parts on the way

Three of the college's six new Mongoose Vanish mountain bikes were assembled incorrectly and need repair, said Ashley LaCarter, director of residence life and campus recreation.

"Some students mentioned that the gears were loose, so we hired someone to come in," LaCarter said.

The bike repairman had to order new parts for the bikes before they could be fixed, she said.

She expects the parts to arrive this week.

Drunken fighting, pursuit

An inebriated male student forced his way into an upper apartment on Park Street Saturday night while following a female student. Campus security responded to the incident at 12:40 a.m. Sunday when apartment residents called Hillsdale City Police, who came shortly after, said Director of Security Mike Wertz. The student left the apartment after hitting and shoving other students and before security arrived, but other students reported his name and actions to campus security and the dean of men.

Campus security closed down a party of about 150 people at a lower apartment on Park Street Saturday night after an unknown person driving a car tossed a rock through a next-door window. Students collect supplies for Sudan

Eight teams of students canvassed the community last Saturday afternoon, collecting school supplies for Sudanese children. Organizer and GOAL program director Sarah Howard, a junior, said the project was merely the first of many to follow.

"We kind of need to have something that's consistent that can have quantifiable results students can see," she said. "It's a small project that parallels the size of the campus. This is a unique opportunity for students."

The supplies will be shipped to the nonprofit Rebuild Sudan, an organization begun by Lost Boy Michael Kuany. Among other further events she plans, including showing a Lost Boys documentary and possibly a benefit dinner, Howard said she and Kuany are trying to coordinate him speaking on campus.

Online registration explained

The registrar's office will hold informational meetings for students interested in learning how to use online software to register for spring 2009 classes. Registrar Douglas McArthur said he will give a presentation on WebAdvisor and its "search for sections" tool, with which students can begin building potential schedules when the list of next semester's classes goes online.

On Oct. 27, seniors may begin registering, followed by juniors, sophomores and lastly freshmen. Other new WebAdvisor tools are already in place, such as "My Restrictions," which alerts students of issues that would prevent them from registering, such as unpaid fines.

The seniors' meeting was held yesterday at 9:30 p.m. The juniors' meeting will take place tonight the sophomores' on Tues., Oct. 7 and the freshmen's on Wed, Oct. 8., each one at 9:30 p.m.

All meetings will take place in Phillips Auditorium. The meeting should take an hour to an hour and fifteen minutes, depending on questions, McArthur said.
