See a twister on the horizon, Suites residents??Make a run for it
In the event of a tornado, The Suites residents don't have the option of duck and cover.
Instead, they have to make a run for it.
Because The Suites don't have a designated area where students can wait out hazardous weather, residents must seek shelter elsewhere.
The procedure sheet for a tornado watch or warning issued by Hillsdale College lists Benzing Residence and Roche Sports Complex as the alternative shelter areas for The Suites in the event of a potential or actual disaster.
"Students generally don't know what to do," said senior Raz Shafer, a resident assistant at The Suites.
He said RAs discuss the evacuation procedure when explaining general disaster plans at the all-suite orientation.
"I'd rather be in Benzing or the Sports Complex instead of the Suites," Shafer said. "I think the current plan works well."
Residents of the Suites shouldn't worry too much, however; according to the college's procedure sheet, a watch indicates that a tornado could develop, and a warning means a tornado (or severe thunderstorm) has been sighted in Hillsdale County - not that a funnel cloud is on campus.
Either way, warning sirens alert students of their need for shelter before anyone needs to worry about getting swept off their feet.
