Student injured
Junior Drew De Jong broke several bones and sustained a concussion after rear-ending a construction truck Monday night.
After a brief visit to the Hillsdale Community Health Center, a helicopter airlifted De Jong to Toledo Hospital, where his roommates and family from Minnesota joined him.
A broken thighbone, two broken forearm bones and a slight concussion were the extent of his injuries. The concussion also caused some short-term memory loss.
Freshman Holly Larson said De Jong was driving from Wal-Mart after buying hot dogs for Monday's Minnesota Vikings game.
The front, left portion of his car sustained the most damage.
De Jong underwent surgery on his leg at 4 p.m. Wednesday. Surgeons intended to insert a metal rod in his hip, down to the femur.
Later they will screw plates into his left forearm to support the broken bones.
His mother, Debbi De Jong, said Drew may return home as early as next week.

Rummage sale next week
The Hillsdale College Women Commissioners will hold their annual rummage sale next week on Sept. 17 and 18 in the Roche Sports Complex gymnasium. The commissioners stopped accepting donations for the sweeping sale several months ago because they were already at capacity. On Wednesday, the sale runs from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Shoppers pay a flat fee for all they can fit into a grocery bag. The giant event has repeated for more than 50 years and requires more than 150 volunteers to pull off. The proceeds fund 22 Hillsdale College scholarships.
