The Hillsdale College Intramural Sports Program, a longtime stronghold for flag football and basketball, changes this year to ultimately revamp the entire program.
A new emphasis on health, wellness and student direction will expand the offering of IM sports and if all goes as planned, make exercise and fitness attractive to all students.
"The most important thing is to make students aware of the need to live a balanced life," said Ashley LaCarter '08, director of the new health and wellness Program.
The program will incorporate a wider selection of sports, including volleyball, dodgeball and soccer. More planned changes include weekend pick-up games instead of just regularly scheduled seasons. LaCarter said this will accommodate even the busiest schedules.
"It's really cool. I've already noticed a lot of students using the new stuff," junior Abby Ashmore said, regarding the new bikes and canoes purchased by the school.
New equipment is another example of the extended IM program, and Ashmore believes students have already begun to notice the changes.
The IM program is also getting closer to building a new IM sports center complete with indoor basketball and tennis courts and an extensive array of cardio equipment.
Student Director of Intramural Sports Kurt Weil, a senior, said the IM sports center will bring more options to students.
"We just need approval from one more donor, and we'll hopefully be able to break ground early next semester," Weil said.
Overcrowding in the Roche Sports Complex between varsity athletics and IM activities acted as a catalyst for needing additional sports center, Weil said.
