Mossey Library purchased a compact shelving system for its bottom floor this summer, a change intended to save space without limiting access.
"The whole stack will move all at once so you can get into the area that you want to retrieve your materials from," Library Director Dan Knoch said.
Student employees spent about six weeks rearranging books to prepare for the new system, then unloaded the shelves, which weighed thousands of pounds, from delivery trucks.
"There was 15 tons in the first semi and I had to slip it up a hill and down a floor," senior Drew Gonshorowski said.
The compact shelves hold most of the periodicals, freeing space for more books on the second and third floors.
Units PT through the ZA - chemistry and biology books - have moved to the right side of the third floor, Librarian Linda Moore said.
